Sweet Threads: Cherishing Every Stitch Of This Precious Life
Personal Posts by Andrea Dozier

I’m 34 weeks and even though this pregnancy has been very good to me {not a day of nausea}, I’m not going to hate being able to hold this beautiful baby boy in my arms. Proof that I am not missing any meals…

We’ve been making a lot of changes to prepare for my husband’s upcoming deployment. The biggest one is that we’ve been boxing up our current house and moving {locally}. Well, we haven’t quite “moved in,” but that will come soon. There is some work to do on the new place, but we’re just tackling it a day at a time. Being very close to family will be a huge blessing with a newborn and very active four year old!

Another day I will probably reflect a little bit about what it’s like to brace yourself for a deployment while pregnancy hormones try to sabotage your sanity… but for now I’m finding that the best medicine is to stay active. Talk to people {even when there’s not a lot to say}. Grab drinks at Sonic. Clean until it shines. Let it go when it’s not important. Hold him every chance you get. Speak openly about your fears. Stay fanatical about Lost {only three more hours left}. Sleep when you can. Work when insomnia doesn’t let you sleep. Take lots of pictures. There will never be enough, but they will mean everything when he’s gone. ♥

Part II of III

After absorbing Vania & Christine’s insightful presentation, {and of course asking questions freely}, we got our photography gear together and headed out to a private orchard to shoot a group session. Their location of choice is perfect. They have definitely inspired me to seek my own reliable “outdoor studio” here in Dayton.

The models, married couple Kristian & Skyler, were adorable! They were open to all suggestions and calmly posed in spite of having “18 shutters & 36 eyes all over them” as Vania explained in the recap of the workshop.

I love photographing just before sunset when so many gorgeous colors unapologetically flaunt their beauty:

Vania & Christine brought a mini trampoline and it was genius! Kristian was adventurous enough to do a few takes for us {in the amazing wedding gown} and this is probably one of my favorites from the day. She made flying look effortless:

I’m so glad they included a group session! I loved watching Simply Bloom work together and get a better understanding of how they direct their clients during a shoot. There is so much to learn by observing. At first I felt a little shy to “jump in,” but I find comfort holding my camera. It’s familiar. I forget that at this point it’s hard to put on shoes or bend over… There is an energy that compels me to capture everything that is playing so beautifully before my eyes. I have a hard time putting it down.

Thank you for sharing this experience with me as I revisit such a fantastic workshop! In the final part, I will share how they’ve impacted me personally at this “interesting” season in my life.

Part I of III

I have been anticipating the moment when I could reflect and share the goodness from an experience that will most certainly shape the rest of my photography career. I am obviously referring to the absolutely amazing Simply Bloom Workshop I attended last week in Huntsville, Alabama.

If you aren’t familiar with Christine & Vania’s work, then you must check out their portfolio and blog! Every time they post new material I am impressed by their unique vision, talent, and most of all, consistency. They draw out the beautiful essence of each and every lucky person that is captured with their cameras. Their style is romantic and their artwork truly inspires me. I was thrilled when they announced that their workshop would be held during a time when I could attend.

Simply Bloom Photography is relatively new to the wedding photography industry, but it’s not an accident that their partnership is light years beyond their two year experience. As they shared their story, it’s very clear Christine & Vania are passionate and committed to their work. They both graduated as graphic designers and evolved into photographers {one of the reasons I love them so much}. Their evolution was not by chance, they’ve mastered their craft on purpose. They have put a lot of time and research into how to remarkably push the envelope in their business and their images. It’s usually difficult for two artists to work together so fluidly, but there is an absence of competition or pride. Watching them work and interact in perfect sync was enough to make us all wish that perhaps our best friends will be interested in forming a photography partnership someday…

I took some quick snapshots during our breaks, because the chapel was so adorable I couldn’t resist:

For some reason this pregnancy has me disliking cake {what once used to be one of my favorite desserts}. However, the peanut butter frosting from Gigi’s Cupcakes was pure addiction. I won’t lie, I’ve fantasized about having it again…

It was adorable how Christine used the trampoline for a little more height. Being 62 {and a half} inches myself, I can appreciate any and every little boost I can find!

Vania… she has one of the biggest smiles of anyone I’ve ever met!

The models were actually past wedding clients for Vania & Christine. They were fantastic & very patient with all of us scrambling to shoot them.

The workshop was a full day and intense. I don’t think I’ve scribbled so many notes since my Flash class {no kidding, seven large pages and I write terribly small}. Being eight months pregnant, I was a little nervous about the trip & whether I’d be able to keep up with everyone else. It was so incredible I almost forgot about my limitations until dinner. By the time our crème brûlée arrived, I could barely keep my eyes open. I can’t remember the last time a day has passed so quickly, but exhausted never felt so good!

Christine and Vania, thank you so much for all the work & preparation you put into such a lovely workshop. You made us all feel very welcome and shared so many valuable insights that I ponder over constantly. You deserve every honor and recognition that you have earned, you work so hard & produce amazing photographs. Thank you for inspiring me & teaching so much! ♥

{I will be posting my favorite shots from the styled session in the Part II Post from the Simply Bloom Workshop}.

These images are so gorgeous! I was going to sign up for their course but unfortunately they have always been too far away for me as well =( I am with David on the hazy summer look. Would you be able to email me on the processing technique & explain the process a little to get this look? I would really appreciate it!!

    All the best!

    Larissa

I know it’s very late to say so, but I do hope you’ve all had wonderful Easter holidays! The weather here was amazing and we were able to spend a lot of time with my family. Black is one of my favorite colors to decorate with, so I find myself using it in just about all of my holiday decor too. This year I dressed up some wooden eggs with lace and buttons for my living room {on cake stands of course}.

I am just about to take off for Alabama for a photography workshop & to see some very good friends that are stationed near there. I’ve been looking forward to this week very much and there’s been a lot to do to prepare for it, so please excuse my lack of posts recently! I have had a chance to work with some beautiful families, if you’d like a sneak peak of some upcoming posts see my Facebook page.

I can’t wait to meet the ladies behind Simply Bloom Photography and learn all I can from them. They are two of the most talented photographers that I know of, and I am ecstatic that they are hosting a workshop that’s on our side of the country. I am officially 29 weeks along today, so I will be taking my time getting there and back!

Have a great week, regular posting will resume when I return. ♥

I never aspired to be a wedding photographer. I think if I had, I would have been much better prepared as a business woman. I like to plan ahead. I like to have goals. In more than one sense, this is the irony of my life as a student turned Air Force wife and graphic designer turned photographer. Just when I think I know it all, I am spontaneously pooling my resources to deal with a new hand of cards.

While I was working on a graphic design degree {assuming I would work for a firm or continue to freelance}, some photography opportunities presented themselves. At first I said “no,” because the thought of being responsible to capture a wedding terrified me. A few months later, more brides were contacting me through Facebook {ironically all at once}. The e-mail usually began with, “I know you don’t do weddings… but I love your work…” I had four weddings booked before I even owned a DSLR. They were all with friends that knew I wasn’t promoting myself or trying to be something I wasn’t. They just wanted me to capture their weddings the same way I took pictures of everything else. At that point I was still terrified, but curious. I wanted to honor my commitments, then see if I wanted to take the leap of becoming a wedding photographer or run back to the design world. I didn’t realize at the time how closely the two are connected… it’s perfect for me.

I’m very lucky to have a husband who is not only an encourager, but Rocky had worked in the photography field for several years before his current Air Force career. He has a deep understanding of film, digital, and lighting techniques. However, there is much more to managing a photography business than selecting lenses or knowing how to white balance correctly. The path isn’t always very clear, because everyone has a unique story, style, & goal for their careers. I have some friends, who are also on the road of transforming their hobby into a profession, and I want to devote parts of my blog in sharing and encouraging the resources I find to be valuable. I hope to also post information from photographers that I admire who can shed some light on topics I am still learning about.

For months on Twitter I’d been hearing about [B] School Study Hall chats. I finally watched one with Jasmine Star, and even though I felt a little like a photography nerd, {sketchbook open, volume turned up, and scribbling notes}, I learned a lot. It made me interested in checking out what the [B] School actually is and eventually I signed up. It is one of the best investments I have made. There are instructional videos, forums, and a bunch of really amazing seasoned photographers who don’t mind helping new ones out. Many of them are wedding photographers, but there are many portrait photographers who cover portrait related topics.

It was through one of these forum threads that I found out about Will Duris and his really cool iPhone mobile portfolio tool. Flash sites don’t play on mobile browsers, so instead of getting a blank screen, iPhone users can now be redirected to a mobile portfolio site that allows them to peek at my work, read my bio, and contact me when they visit andreadozier.com. It is easy to set up and he is good about answering any questions you have. It’s also very quick once you have your files ready! I still don’t have an iPhone, but I know a lot of you do. I highly recommend it. You can see more on Will’s blog and get your own set up!

Here are some examples from my iPhone mobile portfolio:

  • Sarah Beeman - October 25, 2010 - 1:59 pm

hi! I’m 16 and have done an engagement session, family portrait session, and 3 of my friends senior pictures.. I am really enjoying what i’m doing and want to learn more! So looking around your website, i LOVE our style of photography! I Own a Canon Digital Rebel Xsi and use a telephoto 70-300 lense and was wondering what you use? I want to know what i really should invest in. The only other piece of equipment i have is a tripod haha. The lighting in your pics is just SO beautful! I’m looking to buy a new lense 🙂 Thanks 🙂

  • Andrea - October 27, 2010 - 8:45 am

Thank you Sarah, and I’m glad you enjoy photography too! My cameras & lens collection has been growing over the years. Over time you learn what you enjoy using & what you don’t. It’s not so much that one is right and another is wrong (although if you are documenting events, you quickly learn some are more suited for certain places than others). I love using zoom lenses for children & event photography. I love using my primes for newborn portrait sessions and still life. I shoot with Nikon, but they are both amazing brands with a lot of good stuff in their lines ups. I preferred my 70-200 lens for a long time, but now I’m really appreciating my 24-70- it helps to tell the “complete” story a little better! Best of luck to you with everything!

Hi Kate, that is really cool… I’m excited for you and what you do in the future! At this time I’m not doing anything like that, but in the future I would definitely consider it. Find me on Facebook & keep in touch, so that I can let you know if I do 🙂
