Happy Memorial Day!

This portrait session is from a year ago, when Q. & Alli asked if we could do pictures during their visit to Dayton. Alli, of Hooray blog, is a such a sweet creative talent that I’ve been fortunate to meet online & photograph her styling for a few assignments. If you’ve read my blog over the years, you will remember some of our projects. I’ve linked a few of them at the bottom if you are a new reader. We’ve had a lot of fun and will need to collaborate again sometime soon!

I was more than happy to show my friends around our Oregon District before they spent the rest of the afternoon at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Museum. Q was set to deploy a few days after, so this was a really special time for them before he left. I’m so thankful for people who endure separation to keep our life at home stable. When I photograph military families, I try to weave “subtle hints of their families’ military legacy without making it the dominant theme.”

We started on Wayne Avenue at Press Coffee Bar, where they sell tasty cool drinks too.

Peonies were in bloom so I brought a few from my yard.
They are starting to bloom now, so I will be flower bombing my friends with them soon.

    Your work is so beautiful! These are so special to have. I’m used to having fun working with you behind camera (so it felt completely awkward going into this!) but I just love how thoughtful you are about the whole process and at capturing moments.

James & Erica’s {Rainy} Engagement Session in Yellow Springs, Ohio

Erica contacted me shortly after getting engaged & told me she wanted to be photographed in Yellow Springs, Ohio because she used to live there. It is a place I’ve been wanting to photograph again for a long time. It has so many unique nooks & offers endless creative inspiration, especially in the fall. I just wish there were more time for wandering the streets aimlessly & hiking on those beautiful trails.

They brought along their two “babies,” Moxy & Winston. I’m so glad they did. ♥

{I brought along a poncho, definitely did not look as fashionable as Erica}.

 One more bonus, because Winston was just so handsome!

As I mentioned at the end of the Lovely Rentals Engagement Post, Shawn & Jill had a summer downpour during their engagement session. We rescheduled for a couple days later and even though there was rain on the horizon, part of the sky was gorgeous so we focused on that.

The summer’s watercolor sky was a dream to have as a backdrop.

The rain held off and we had a gorgeous colorful sunset.

Talk about a lovely idea!

As a wedding photographer, it’s always fun to see how brides & grooms have been customizing their wedding celebrations with anything from vintage, DIY decor, eclectic thrift finds, to modern & minimalist fashions.
The new wedding trend is that there is no trend.
It’s about your story & being able to craft a wedding that feels like YOU.
Now there is a way for Dayton locals to style weddings & events by renting the props & furniture.

I was so excited to find out that wedding & portrait photographer, Molly Dues, was starting a modern vintage rental company here in Dayton, Ohio. They are technically located in the charming downtown of Troy, Ohio and have a beautiful studio space above the Obama Center. I might or might not find excuses to stop by and say hello to the friendly & gifted photographers who run it, Molly & Rachel. 🙂

Lovely Rentals was so kind to sponsor a recent engagement session I did and I was so impressed with the stylist they offered to help us, Andria. She was so sweet & we were talking about “kindred spirits” before we knew it. She was really helpful with styling a bohemian engagement session that was absolutely gorgeous. I am so excited to tell my treasure seeking & busy brides about this opportunity to work with a boutique that will help set up engagement sessions, wedding displays {your cake table or guest sign in area}, and special events {bridal showers!}.

This was all shot in about fifteen minutes because after a long hot summer drought, it finally poured mid session! We decided to reschedule for a couple days later & they had a whole new evening sky to work with. Stay tuned for the second part of Shawn & Jill’s special engagement session.
Thankfully, they had the most gorgeous wedding weather. I think they deserved it after the deluge during their engagement session!
