Happy Memorial Day!

This portrait session is from a year ago, when Q. & Alli asked if we could do pictures during their visit to Dayton. Alli, of Hooray blog, is a such a sweet creative talent that I’ve been fortunate to meet online & photograph her styling for a few assignments. If you’ve read my blog over the years, you will remember some of our projects. I’ve linked a few of them at the bottom if you are a new reader. We’ve had a lot of fun and will need to collaborate again sometime soon!

I was more than happy to show my friends around our Oregon District before they spent the rest of the afternoon at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Museum. Q was set to deploy a few days after, so this was a really special time for them before he left. I’m so thankful for people who endure separation to keep our life at home stable. When I photograph military families, I try to weave “subtle hints of their families’ military legacy without making it the dominant theme.”

We started on Wayne Avenue at Press Coffee Bar, where they sell tasty cool drinks too.

Peonies were in bloom so I brought a few from my yard.
They are starting to bloom now, so I will be flower bombing my friends with them soon.

Your work is so beautiful! These are so special to have. I’m used to having fun working with you behind camera (so it felt completely awkward going into this!) but I just love how thoughtful you are about the whole process and at capturing moments.

This spring I started accepting studio portrait sessions at Dayton’s Lost & Found Vintage Rentals studio. My first booking came from Jill, who was a past bride of mine & now has her own baby girl! It was great to see them as parents & photograph them as a family of three. Baby girl had fun exploring the space & being kissed by mama and daddy. She makes me miss those chubby rolls that seem to disappear when the walking starts! As you scroll down, you’ll see she is just about ready to take those first steps!

When we planned the session over coffee, Jill let me know that she was really inspired by classic black & white photography. It was important for her to choose her wardrobe so that the textures would pop. We chose to keep the setting very simple so that the portraits would reflect a minimal style. I really like how the print on her dress translated to black & white.

    Cincinnati Mural by John Ruthven

“Cincinnati, even your parking lots are gorgeous. I love how you let art garnish every nook of your city.”

I originally shared this photo & quote on my Instagram last night after visiting Cincinnati to help assist at a wedding. When I woke up, I saw that one of my brides mentioned that the man who painted this is artist John A. Ruthven… and I met him at her wedding! He was thrilled to host the wedding at his beautiful farm. He was a generous host who kept checking on the girls to make sure they had everything they needed while they prepared for the ceremony. They told me that he is a painter who also lives in Cincinnati, but I had no idea he was quite possibly working on this breathtaking painting that I saw last night. I wouldn’t have known this was his work unless I shared this iPhone image.

Over much needed coffee this morning, I’ve been speculating about the connections we make through the state & world. Sometimes it is overwhelming to keep up with the fast pace of the online community, but I’m so grateful for the people I’ve met. I treasure that we can keep in touch through images. It has brightened my day to discover the rest of the story behind a moment that inspired me.

After doing a little research, I saw that the acrylic painting this mural is based off of is titled MARTHA, the Last Passenger Pigeon. It is an ode to the manner that they flew in & the tragedy that the last one died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. It is You can check out his website to see a video of the construction of the mural in a time lapse!

Thank you for sharing Erin! ♥

It’s funny how we can spend so much time in one place in a monotonous schedule. Next thing we know, it’s been six years & a lifetime since we’ve gone back. I spent the bulk of my time at Sinclair in Building 13 as a Visual Communications major cutting paper with X-ACTO knives, sketching design ideas, & being introduced to designing Flash websites (yes, I laugh now). My capstone project, the one that spanned a few quarters, was a fictitious card shop- Kismet. I’ve always enjoyed selecting clever greeting cards & unique stationery for my dearest friends & family. Creating an imaginary shop about cards seemed fitting for my portfolio project. I could have never guessed that years later I would return to this city block as a photographer taking pictures of a new (real) Dayton card & party called Confetti.

When I heard that my friend, Briana was opening Confetti, I knew it was going to be a place I would love. It is coincidental that it is just blocks away from my beloved Building 13. I passed Sinclair today very proud & a little sentimental to be a product of our city & that I’ve found my niche in photography. I believe it is another kind of Kismet.

Briana is also a wedding photographer from Dayton & we met through Facebook. I noticed she was always helpful & polite with other photographers, so I emailed her. That same morning, she had decided to email me. Within five minutes we both received messages from each asking about meeting in person. We laughed and felt that a coffee date was surely meant to be!

Briana’s shop, Confetti, is a new boutique card & party shop located on 42 W. Fifth Street in Dayton. When I walked in, it felt like every piece she chose was meant for me. Briana calls it a shop “that feels like a tangible Etsy,” and I completely agree. You can browse beautifully designed paper goods. Her specialty is also in stylish party supplies, including beautiful fringed oversize balloons. My only regret is that we did not play Katy Perry’s Birthday for our session…

Alli, I thought of you while I was there! You would love it, please come back soon! 🙂

This next project has been a refreshing & creative journey that I’m really excited to share with you. Aubrey & I went to high school together, and I met her through fast pitch softball. I’m not going to say how long ago that was, but now we both have kiddos playing baseball in our hometown. 😉

When she started introducing her handmade Skin Food, I was thrilled to get on board & photograph her beautiful products. I love that her decision to start making her line came out of her desire to give her massage clients a better experience. She uses natural ingredients to achieve amazing results. She also uses them for herself & her four children, so you know that she stands behind her organic oils & soaps. I’m inspired by her hard work and the way that she has not only conceptualized each & every one, but also makes everything herself! When you order a package, she is the one who assembles it & ships it to you.

Skin Food by Aubrey | Photography by Andrea Doziér

    In her words,

“I began creating and crafting soaps and lotions when my sister was given a soap kit for christmas, I was twelve. I have evolved from kitchen kits to kitchens dedicated to my craft.

Skin Food was born years ago while I was making oatmeal baths to soothe irritated skin and coffee masks to tighten a tired face. I use SUPER FOODS, butter, herbs and oils to create Skin Food. I have formulated and perfected recipes to soothe, cleanse and restore skin and their ailments. I have spent endless hours researching ingredients, their origins, how they are cultivated and their benefits in relation to the body, nutritionally and applied topically. I have become the go-to for mothers, fathers, and peers often asking questions such as what can be used on their baby’s rash or to soothe their irritated skin. Do I have an alternative to a natural deodorant? What do I use on my skin? I began making and sharing my products with family, friends and clients. I have been touched by Skin Food stories and knowing a scar is a little lighter a or a rash is now gone. It allows me to put positive thoughts and good intentions into every batch made. I have fallen in love with my Skin Food. I have fallen in love with the results! I am in love knowing what I am putting on my body and my kids bodies is just as good as what I put in it.

She also shares some great skin care tips & information on her Etsy page, in the “about” section.
