Sweet Threads: Cherishing Every Stitch Of This Precious Life
Personal Posts by Andrea Dozier

My desk is located in the eat-in part of my kitchen. I’ve been very excited to transition it from being a clump in the corner to a space that reflects what I love. This past weekend we painted my editing “studio” with Martha Stewart’s Glass of Milk {white} paint. It always amazes me what a little paint will do to refresh a tired room.

I made a DIY Doily Lantern {sans the lantern part} I’ve been seeing so much on Pinterest. Here it is pre-balloon pop.
Still working out the kinks in getting it to keep it’s round shape. Any ideas would be awesome!

Rock & Kevin put together the Ikea furniture. I think Kevin is more help than I am with tools.

You can see what has inspired me on my Pinterest board here. I can’t wait to share the whole area when we are finished {“befores” too}… getting close! ♥

This is exciting!!!! I love make overs, can’t wait to see the end result!!!

How dare you tease us like this? Hehehe!

While I was getting ready for Kevin’s fifth birthday party & have found myself getting lost looking at albums of photographs. He has changed so much in the past couple years, I am barely computing how fast he is growing. We celebrated his March 23 birthday the way he likes it- lunch at McDonalds with Daddy and a trip to Gigi’s Cupcakes.
I have become obsessed with Polaroids and have been snapping away during his birthday week. It’s so easy to capture the moment without being fussy.

In the past couple years, Kevin has developed a few obsessions. The first one was Nemo. He loved anything that had to do with fish. Then he received a Thomas train for Toys R Us and there was train-mania going on around here. One thousand engines later, he is back “into the sea.” More specifically, what he coins “Ocean Animals.” His favorites are squid (he can name several types & identify them) & sharks.

I wanted to do something that reflected Kevin’s interests, but steer away from the colorful fish theme we did a few years ago. I tried to pull off a bit of a nautical party with squid & shark influences. I tried to keep everything simple & reusable as much as possible.

Rocky saw this idea for a watermelon carved into a shark on my Pinterest board, and decided he was going to make it. He bought a watermelon (they are a little small because they aren’t quite in season yet) & went to work. It was so cute to watch him create his masterpiece, Kevin & I were impressed. 😀

Rock said it reminded him of one of Steven King’s “Langoliers,” but it was cute nonetheless. The kids really liked the Swedish fish coming out of its mouth.

Since I was trying to focus more on gifts/decor that would last, (and not just get shoved into our tiny garage when the party was over), I decided to order all three of the “mans” matching screen printed squid shirts. They were another Pinterest find, but you can buy them on Etsy from DesignThreads. They responded to my e-mails quickly & sent my customized order very promptly. I was so impressed with their customer service & of course we loved the squid shirts!
Rock & I were really excited to show them to Kevin.

I found the colorful squid graphic on Etsy, designed them in InDesign, & used Kraft envelopes to send them.

I take full responsibility for being a mom who can not do it “all.” There are some pretty papers & twine that are untouched because I didn’t have time to make pom poms & bunting. I guess between cleaning the house, baking, working, & sometimes sleeping… a few projects didn’t get done. I scribbled an idea of what it might have looked like. 😉

My two little “mans” didn’t seem to miss any of the fluff I had imagined making…

Before Damian was born, Kevin came up with a few names for him. One of them was, “Ocean Diver.” We kindly declined his suggestion (sounded a little too much like Jason Lee’s son “Pilot Inspektor”). We weren’t really sure what he would think of the new baby since he was used to having us all to himself for four years. On the way home from the hospital he gave his approval when he quietly announced that he “sure loved his little brother Ocean.”

Ever since then the nickname has been something of a sweet reminder of how much he surprised us by welcoming his brother, instead of demanding the attention or resenting him. “Damian Ocean” kind of reminds me of “Danny Ocean,” one of my favorite movie characters. It has stuck. Plus I enjoy the weird stares I get at the grocery store when people hear me call my kid Ocean.

With the weather being a cold, winter day (at the end of March you never know around here), we knew we’d have to squeeze the party inside. I used my bookshelf to serve some of the treats & hold the favors. The grandparents & parents wrote little messages to the kiddos & took them home. This year I ruled out anything fondant & focused on making treats that people would enjoy eating. His cake was confetti (his choice) and peanut butter frosting. I also baked Nutella whoopie pies with peanut butter cookies. The filling was homemade whipped cream + Nutella.
These beautiful flowers are courtesy of Hooray Design! Cute, right!?

I found these wooden forks & spoons on Amazon (this way I can use the extra for Damian’s July birthday party). For dinner, we had fish that my husband and Father-in-Law caught on Lake Erie. Rocky breaded them & fried them with his homemade hush puppies. It was so good. I would have pictures, but I was too hungry to have the patience to photograph any of it. Prepping for parties is exhausting 😉

My inspiration for the cake was from Kevin’s squid drawings. I tried to replicate his style with white chocolate, but I think his are better.

I adore Bakerella’s cake pops and made them a few years ago for his third birthday party. This year I took the easier route & used an ice cream scoop to shape Rice Krispie Treat Pops. Every party needs some easy-to-eat portable treats.

Shark Tattoos… the kids enjoyed them! I used Kevin’s shark plaster mold set it to make white chocolate sharks as favors for the kids (rinsed & cleaned thoroughly beforehand).

I see this angle so often, he is always “reading” something.

My mom snapped a quick Polaroid of us at the end of the night. It was a busy day but so much fun to celebrate his fifth birthday with our family!

The funny thing about birthdays, is that often the birthday child is given something that leads to a new interest. I will throw out a prediction…

Dinosaurs for his sixth birthday party? ♥

Everyone says you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover, but I disagree. I think that if someone invests in a good cover photograph & inventive graphic designer… it must mean there’s some good stuff between the pages. If there’s not, at least you have a pretty cover to look at. As a former graphic designer, I appreciate good cover art.

When I heard that Jose Villa was writing a book, I couldn’t wait to buy it. He is an outrageously talented photographer & truly a pioneer in the wedding photography industry. His vision is pure & I personally like that he showcases a lot of beautiful Spanish-influenced imagery. I ordered his book with the same excitement that I order cookbooks. Completely enthusiastic about the photographs, not expecting much from the captions. Unknowingly I assumed that his book, Fine Art Wedding Photography {Jose Villa & Jeff Kent}, was just a collection of his breathtaking images. Which in itself, for me, was worth the small price.

I had it all wrong.
I should have ordered two copies.

One for admiring all the lovely pristine pages filled his wedding artwork.
One for highlighting, underlining, and scribbling notes on every page.
It is an exhaustive field guide, without the exhaustive part. It doesn’t read like your typical photography manual. He writes like a friend explaining their insight of a heartfelt craft. It’s detailed without being boring. It’s technical without being confusing. It’s informative without being arrogant. I couldn’t put it down.

I was so moved by his understanding of how to create a Fine Art Wedding experience for your clients & the way he liberally shared his wisdom. He has challenged me to continue to compose artwork for my couples. I don’t shoot film, but I speak openly with my clients about having a “film mentality.” I can take thousands of images, almost unlimited. However, I choose to shoot less & compose more. I try to photograph from the most compelling angles & tell the story of the moment. No detail is too small. I want genuine emotions to show.

No matter what stage in your professional career, Jose Villa’s book will either educate you or simply inspire you. For me, it did both.

With a very tight wedding photography schedule & two little boys, I don’t have the opportunity to pack up for all the typical photography workshops, WPPI, or mentorships. I have to ration my limited time. I really appreciated this book because it covers so many aspects of wedding photography & I can take my time to absorb it all. Reading his book felt like a one on one, honest conversation where he generously explained the secrets to how he achieves his artisan style of wedding photography.

Believe me, his secrets are worth knowing.

It’s hard to photograph a book written & photographed by the master in your field, so I cheated a little & inserted a cute baby {my eight month old Damian} 😀

*Not affiliated in any way with Jose Villa, just really love this book & hope other photographers will find out how awesome it is too! ♥

Mine better come today!!! Ive heard so many wonderful reviews already!!!!! <3

Just ordered mine yesterday 🙂 So excited!!

Winter lingers a little longer where we’re from. I see current photographs of blooming trees, bright colors, & gorgeous sunlight in various places across the world. I can’t help but feel envious since we are bracing for more cold days & barren landscapes. In some ways, I’ve never been patient. I’ll never grow out of being anxious for Christmas or Spring. It’s in my blood.

A few months ago I had a conversation with my four year old son, Kevin. While having a morning snack he looked at a canvas of himself hanging in our living room.

I want to jump inside that picture,” he told me. “I want to bring you, and Damian, and Daddy,” he said with a wistful smile.

I looked at the picture he referenced. We used to take daily walks on a bike path near our old house. There was a small field we passed & the day I brought my camera {and a cute outfit} it started to rain. I still managed to capture a few images of three year old Kevin before we made a run for home sloshing in the puddles.

Unknowingly he summed up the potential power that photographs have. He reminded me why pictures are taken.

I capture the soul of a moment so that even the subject is jealous of the experience.

I capture images that record a history, so that the ones who were not there are able to relive the event.

This past year, with a deployment looming, an emotional pregnancy, Rock’s Achilles injury, a new {old} home, a new baby…
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked at the small canvas of Rocky & I on our wedding day and wanted to visit that simple, splendid moment.
To visit the innocence of our beginning.
To remember why we have everything to fight for when it feels like the universe plots against us.
To feel thankful for all we have & all we have continued to build together.

Going back to where we’ve been helps us to embrace what will come.
I will admit that I have done a good share of canvas jumping. I am a stronger, happier, woman for it.

This past week was Kevin’s birthday, he is now five. I finally made some prints from our session with his Easter outfit. They hang above our couch with the DIY doily covered pillows {thanks mom}. The one where he holds my hand is in my please remodel me office. I like to look at it while I work & remember how nice it is when he lets me hold his hand. Looking at this picture makes me forget how much I can’t stand the wallpaper residue from the previous owners. Kind of.

Once the weather warms up I can’t wait to freshen up the office & make it feel more like home. You can see some of my inspiration on my Pinterest boards here.

We celebrated Kevin’s birthday this week, it was a good time for my little family. I will share some of the fun soon. ♥

Kevin is adorable!!And the studio looks very cozy 😉

This week has been all about playing catch up. I have my first wedding of the season this weekend, so I have been trying to touch base with clients, ship orders, & clean up the office. If you are waiting on an e-mail or phone call, don’t worry… I am definitely not through with my list yet! The hidden fact about being a wedding photographer is that you do a lot of work inside that seems to have nothing to do with a camera. I’ve been feeling a little suffocated after this long winter, I am so excited to take pictures! Nothing tops warm weather & photographing weddings.

Rocky took his much anticipated Air Force promotion test, so we all feel the relief of knowing it’s done & we won’t know the results until mid summer. Now that he’s finished studying, we look forward to doing really fun things at some point this weekend: a trip to Ikea, organizing the garage, meeting with our accountant to file taxes, & planting grass. Don’t worry, we won’t be too wild.

I just found our food coloring… looks like we’ll have green Coronas around here. Hope you all have a fun St. Patrick’s Day! ♥
